CLE – MICTLÁN SKULL AND RHYME
Primer Concurso de Calaveritas Literarias en Inglés
✦ ☠ ✦
Where language meets tradition, and even Death has something to say.
“SKULL AND RHYME”,

01. A DANCE AMONG CEMPASÚCHIL FLOWERS
Nivel II-8E · Mtra. Mariana Paloma Tinoco Morales
Participante: Francisco Elías Estrada Damián
English version
A Dance Among Cempasúchil Flowers
Bright orange marigolds light up the street,
Where living and loving souls gather to meet.
With sugar skulls smiling and candles aglow,
We welcome the loved ones we lost long ago.
The sweet smell of bread fills the air,
With photos and memories cherished with care.
No sadness or tears on this magical night,
Just music and color and golden starlight.
A cheerful skeleton dances with grace,
Light on her feet, with a smile on her face.
A gentle reminder, soft and true:
Love leaves a trace; it stays with you.
For death isn’t final, it is not the end,
Just a beautiful bridge to meet once again.
Though days may pass and seasons may turn,
The bond that we share will forever burn.

English version
English or the Grave
La Catrina came to Huatusco with style,
And walked through the ITSH with a bony smile.
With flowers and perfume sweet in the air,
She looked for the Level Four students down there.
They study all day to pass the big test,
Future grads and engineers, doing their best.
But English is tricky, they want to survive,
They are in Level Four and they need Level Five!
They dream of the future, they want to be great,
But old La Catrina refuses to wait.
They study so much to get to the end,
And find in Paloma a teacher and friend.
Miss Paloma is there, so patient and kind,
With a beautiful voice and a brilliant mind.
La Catrina just smiled at the class, it is true,
And said, "For this teacher, I will pardon you!"
So Catrina just left in the dark and the gray,
Leaving the students to live a new day.
She said, "Keep on studying, learn how to thrive!
I will come back for you after Level Five!"

03. THE DAY DEATH RETURNED TO THE TEC
Nivel II-10E · Lic. Rosa Isabel Chicuellar Berriel
Participante: Pamela Lazo Reyes
English version
The Day Death Returned to the Tec
One autumn night, beneath the moon,
Death came to the Tec a little too soon.
She knocked on the doors and entered the hall:
"I'm here for my friends, come, one and all!"
Behind her came souls from years gone by,
Like little stars in the midnight sky.
Teachers and students walked side by side,
With stories and memories they could not hide.
Death looked around and started to frown:
"Why is nobody scared? Why won't you sit down?"
Then a student smiled and said:
"Because all our memories keep you near!"
Death lowered her head and smiled at them all,
As their laughter echoed through the halls.
"I came to take you," she said with a sigh,
"But love keeps your stories alive."
Morning arrived and the stars disappeared,
But the souls left a message for those who remembered them:
"Though time moves on and the seasons pass,
The Tec will forever live in our hearts."

Maestros y alumnos marchaban unidos,
04. LITERARY CALAVERA FOR TEACHER ISABEL
Nivel I-3E · Lic. Rosa Isabel Chicuellar Berriel
Participante: Mariana Reyes Pérez
English version
Literary Calavera for Teacher Isabel
La Catrina was at the canteen one day,
Looking for teacher Isabel along the way.
She'd heard that Isabel spoke English well,
And wanted a lesson before going to hell.
While teacher Isabel enjoyed a beer,
The Catrina approached with a grin ear to ear.
The teacher screamed and threw her bottle in fright,
And sent the poor skeleton flying out of sight!
The bottle struck Catrina's bone,
And made a loud and frightening tone.
The Catrina said, "Please, calm down,
I'm just your English student from town!"
Teacher Isabel laughed out loud,
And offered her another beer.
Now they study English every year,
With grammar lessons and spooky cheer.
So now they go to the graveyard,
To dance, drink and sing.
Teacher Isabel gives her lessons,
And Catrina learns everything!

«¡Tranquila, maestra, no me vaya a golpear,
05. THE SKELETON AT UNIVERSITY
Nivel I-13E · Lic. Rosa Isabel Chicuellar Berriel
Participante: Alexander Ramírez García
English version
The Skeleton at University
The skeleton went to class,
He saw his teacher and his glass.
He took his book and sat down,
The smartest skeleton in town.
He studied math both day and night,
But all his numbers gave him fright.
He did his homework with great care,
Then saw the Reaper on the stair.
“I came to take you!” Death did say,
“You have an exam today!”
The skeleton cried, “Please let me be!
I have a test in Geometry!”
He ran to class and took his pen,
“I will not fail this test again!”
He solved the sums and passed with pride,
While Death just watched him from outside.
Now he studies every day,
And keeps the scary Death away.
He wants to graduate with fame,
And be an engineer with a name!

«¡hoy tienes examen, te voy a llevar!».
«¡Déjame, Huesuda, no seas tan cruel,
06. THE ENGINEER WHO FIXED DEATH’S MACHINES
Nivel I-1E · Lic. Jesús Rafael Peralta García
Participante: Tadeo Jiménez Urieta
English version
The Engineer Who Fixed Death’s Machines
Inside a workshop, machines made a roar,
While Death’s old engine shook the floor.
The gears were broken, the motor was slow,
And Death needed an expert who knew how things go.
“Come with me now!” the skeleton cried,
But Lenin smiled and stepped aside.
“I have some machines that I need to repair,
And many more projects waiting right there!”
He checked every gear and tightened each screw,
He fixed the old engine and made it brand-new.
Death watched in wonder and shouted with glee,
“You are the best engineer I’ve ever seen!”
“Come to my kingdom and work for me,
There are broken machines as far as you can see!”
The teacher laughed, “I have no time to go,
I must make these machines work perfectly, you know!”
Now Death has a workshop beneath the ground,
With engines and gears spinning all around.
Lenin Jacob works there both day and night,
Making Death’s machines run perfectly right!

«¡Tengo mucho trabajo, no me puedo marchar!».

Nivel I-11E · Lic. Jesús Rafael Peralta García
Participante: Samir Salinas Ruiz
English version
The Teacher Who Managed Death
At school, Death had a problem one day,
He needed a manager to show him the way.
His plans were a mess, his work was a fright,
He needed a teacher to make things right!
“Dear Rosy, come with me today,
Your business lessons can wait, I say!”
But she replied, “I have work to do,
And many more students to teach, too!”
Death looked at her and shook his head,
“I need a manager!” the skeleton said.
“Come to my office and make a plan,
I need a boss who knows all she can!”
Miss Rosy smiled and took her pen,
“First, I must organize my skeleton men!
We need good teamwork and a strategy,
To make your business a success, you’ll see!”
Now Death is learning every day,
While the teacher leads the way.
In Business Management, she is the best,
Even Death needs her to pass the test!

08. THE ENGINEER MELECIO AND THE DAY OF THE DEAD
Nivel I-17E · Lic. Kevin de Jesús Meneses Carreón
Participante: Ángel Uriel Larragoitia Trujillo
English version
The Engineer Melecio and the Day of the Dead
Engineer Melecio loved his work each day;
He built things strong and true in his own way.
With glasses, blond hair, and a smile so bright,
He made each blueprint turn out just right.
He taught AutoCAD with patience and care,
Drawing bridges and buildings for all to share.
His students asked questions; he answered with a smile,
And made every lesson worthwhile.
He never smoked or drank; he kept his habits clean,
The kindest engineer his students had seen.
So calm and friendly, with a joke to go around,
He made tough lessons fun and sound.
One day the Skeleton arrived with a plan:
“Come with me, Melecio, to the ghostly land!”
He laughed, “Dear Death, I have work to do—
These blueprints need finishing before I go with you!”
She eyed his drawings and nodded her head:
“Teach AutoCAD to the ghosts instead!”
Melecio smiled, ready to begin,
And even in the graveyard, his lessons would win.

«¡Enseña AutoCAD a toda mi población!».
Melecio sonrió y comenzó a enseñar,

Lady Death Visits Huatusco Tech
In Huatusco Tech one evening,
Lady Death came into town,
Looking for the students
And the teachers all around.
In Computer Systems Lab,
She tried a program to run,
But faced with all the coding,
She said, “This isn’t fun!”
In Electromechanical,
She made the motor scream,
She mixed the wires the wrong way round,
And Death came running at the sound!
In Accounting and Industrial
She worked throughout the day,
With numbers, plans, and processes,
She had no time to play!
Poor Lady Death was tired,
And packed her bags to go:
“I’d rather stay inside my grave!
This Tech has beaten me, for sure!”

«¡Mejor vuelvo a mi tumba, me quiero descansar!».
La pobre Catrina sus maletas preparó:
«¡Este Tec me ha vencido! ¡Ya nadie me salvó!
¡Con tantas ingenierías no puedo competir,
mejor bajo a mi tumba y me voy a dormir!».

The Tec was glowing full of light.

The Rally in the Tec was super fast.
The students ended covered in mud,
Still laughing loudly through the flood.
Industrial leading all the crew,
Mario Chispan pulling them through.
Maiza teaching, sharp and kind,
With tough exams to test the mind.
Carmen Cantón leads the whole school,
She is the one who makes the rules.
Samuel Petrili right by her side,
Death just watched, unable to decide.
Death then laughed, "You all look fine,
Twenty-five years and still you shine.
Keep dancing, my brave crew,
Next year I'll come back for you."

“No way,” she replied, “I have a gala to pursue!”
Academic Director Mario was sorting the files,
When Death walked right in with the creepiest of smiles.

You’ll manage the schedules in the shadows below!”
Teacher Melesio was solving a test,
Teaching calculus limits without any rest.
Death whispered: “Your limits have come to an end,
To the infinite void, you must now ascend!”
